I’m a pathologically curious fantasy and sci-fi geek, endlessly fascinated by the strange, mysterious universe we find ourselves in. That curiosity drives everything I write.
My stories are built around ethical and philosophical crises, wrapped in nail-biting thrillers and mysteries and set in alternate worlds unlike our own. I’m drawn to mind-bending ideas that push the envelope and challenge what we think we know.
I love weaving real philosophy, history, and science into my fiction, then turning those ideas into something you can feel. You’ll notice science creeping into all my books, even the fantasy ones. I’m especially hooked on microbiology, astronomy, cosmology, particle physics, artificial intelligence, and anthropology. I can’t claim to be even an armchair expert in any of them, but I could happily geek out with you about them (and plenty of other eclectic stuff) for days.
Some of my favorite writers (and the ones who have most influenced me) are George R. R. Martin, N. K. Jemisin, Andy Weir, Ted Chiang, Susanna Clarke, Pierce Brown, and Brian K. Vaughan.
Outside of writing books, my background is in infectious disease epidemiology, public safety, and in a complete non sequitur, the film business.
